After ten years growing up in Switzerland, 13-year-old Marta is struggling to re-settle in southern Italy. Bright-eyed and restless, she observes the sights, sounds and smells of the city but feels like an outsider. Whilst undergoing the Catholic rite of confirmation, Marta connects and conflicts with both her family and the church as she begins to shape her own life for the first time. Alice Rohrwacher’s writing and directing debut is a sensitive unveiling of the moral and religious layers that can smother adolescence, heralding the arrival of a distinctive cinematic voice.
