On a rainy spring day, Mary-Jane (Jane Birkin), a fortysomething divorcee, falls in love with Julien (Agnès Varda’s son, Mathieu Demy), a fourteen-year-old teenager with a passion for a video game entitled Kung-Fu Master. When this taboo affair transpires, it is decided that Mary-Jane will never see Julien again. But was their affair just another game for him? Through Agnès Varda’s eye, what could have been a damning morality tale becomes an exploration of a woman’s loneliness, anxiety about aging, and crisis of identity.
Special screening in memory of artist and filmmaker Agnès Varda, preceded by an exclusive interview and Agnès Varda’s 1967 short film Uncle Yanco (22 mins)
