Antigone © Belva Film GmbH
This programme of films combines themes from Antiquity to comment on the present. In Corneille-Brecht, Straub draws from Corneille’s tragedies Horace and Othon and Brecht’s 1939 radio play The Trial of Lucullus to denounce all abuse of power and fascist rule. Antigone, one of Huillet and Straub’s most powerful films, bridges historical texts and epochs with Sophocles’s ancient drama based on an earlier legend, translated by Hölderlin and then adapted by Brecht.
Introduced by artist Jean Matthee
Antigone will be presented on a new 35mm print.
