UK/USA | 1950 | dir. Alfred Hitchcock, with Marlene Dietrich, Jane Wyman, Richard Todd
Aspiring actress Eve Gill (Jane Wyman) offers to help her friend Jonathan Cooper (Richard Todd) when he is suspected by the police to have murdered the husband of his flamboyant lover, Charlotte Inwood (Marlene Dietrich). Eve sets out to investigate for herself, and in a typical plot twist for the master of suspense that Hitchcock is, it becomes unclear how to identify friend from foe. Renowned for the attention he paid to the shaping of the style of his heroines, the filmmaker was forced to give in to Marlene Dietrich whose contract dictated a full Dior wardrobe.
