Adapted from Ramiro Pinilla’s homonymous novel, The Bastards Fig Tree is a black comedy about the redemption of a trigger-happy fascist tormented by the acts of murderous violence he committed during the Spanish Civil War. Wracked with the guilt of having executed the local teacher, he becomes convinced that his son will come for revenge and decides to dedicate the rest of his life to taking care of the fig tree that boy has planted at his father’s gravesite to atone for his sins. But his act of redemption doesn’t go unnoticed.
