The Institut français pays tribute to screen legend and icon of the French New Wave, Jeanne Moreau, once called “the greatest actress in the world” by Orson Welles.
Featuring some of her best roles while showing the wide range of her talent, the selection of films, presented at Ciné Lumière from 19 October to 17 December, includes her two 1958 collaborations with Louis Malle, Lift to the Scaffold and The Lovers, milestones in her career, and Jules et Jim which propelled her to international stardom two years later.
Other New Wave titles include La Mariée était en noir by François Truffaut and Jacques Demy’s Bay of Angels.
This tribute also reflects Jeanne Moreau’s collaborations with the best European directors from Michelangelo Antonioni’s La Notte to Luis Buñuel’s Journal d’une femme de chambre or Mademoiselle by Tony Richardson.
Completing the programme, Les Valseuses by Bertrand Blier, in which Jeanne Moreau has such a memorable role, will be accompanied by live music, and The Adolescent, one of the few films she has directed, will be shown at Ciné Lumière.
