With their critical look at modern Africa, the West, and their shared history, Serge Aimé Coulibaly’s undoubtedly political shows have been called visionary; they question in real time the hopes of the African youth he accompanies in all its endeavours, including its revolutions. Kalakuta Republik is a dizzying fusion of dance, music and African revolution, inspired by the supercharged music and scandalous life of Fela Kuti. Coulibaly takes Kuti’s life and beliefs as inspiration for this visually stunning, hypnotic dance work for seven performers that draws lines from African revolution in the 1970s to today’s political resistance.
