French Comics Apéro

Take an aperitif with our librarians and chat about bande dessinée!

For the last session of this season, let’s look at health and the perseverance required to overcome illnesses, should they be either physical or mental. Comic books offer a unique way to explore intimate and often difficult topics while still resorting to humour. AIDS, anorexia, bipolarity or simply the backstage of working in a hospital, the librarians will introduce you to the many facets of depicting such stories. A few classics include Blue Pills by Frederik Peeters, Blast by Manu Larcenet, Lucille by Ludovic Debeurme and Il fallait que je vous dise by Aude Mermilliod.

On your side, select your favourite comics and prepare a few tips for other participants on why you would like to recommend them.

If you need inspiration, register to Culturethèque – our digital library. Among others, browse through L’incroyable histoire de la médecine which has recently been translated to English and launched by SelfmadeHero (see more on our blog here) or discover more works by key French authors in the likes of Manu Larcenet and Aude Mermilliod.

If you prefer to buy printed comic books, bookshops Librarie La Page (for the French version) and Gosh Comics Library (for the English version) are still open for takeaway and delivery!
