Letters from the Front, 1915-1919

The Fabric of Citizenship, 14-18 Armistice Centenary

Commemorating the Great War

We will be commemorating the centenary of the end of the Great War with a reading of some of the letters of a young British nurse who joined the French Red Cross during the war, and a discussion around the fascinating book they are taken from, Trenches and Destruction. Letters from the Front, 1915-1919. Pleasance Walker (Edited by Caroline Roaf, OxfordFolio, 2018). Caroline Roaf, who first discovered the letters, Professor Alison Light (Common People. The History of an English Family, Penguin, 2015) and Dr Franziska Heimburguer (Sorbonne Université) will be discussing this young woman’s experience of the horrors and deprivations of the war but also the art of letter writing and self writing.
