Remembrance of Things Past: a Shadow of Vichy in Contemporary France
Twenty years ago Maurice Papon, a former minister of the French president Giscard d’Estaing was sentenced to ten years in prison for having helped the Nazis in their criminal Final Solution extermination process of European Jews between mid-1942 and mid-1944. His very long trial (six months) served as a catharsis for the long forgetful French State that refused to acknowledge its implication over 5 decades.
2 professors of history, Marc Olivier Baruch (EHESS) and Richard Vinen (King’s College London) revisit this dark page of history.
