Emmanuel Mouret’s dramatic comedy was presented in official competition at the last edition of the Venice Film Festival, in September 2024.
The screening on 3 June will be followed by a Q&A with the film director. Emmanuel Mouret will also introduce the screening of his film Love Affairs (Les choses qu’on dit, les choses qu’on fait) on 4 June, presented as a tribute to the late actor Émilie Dequenne.
Synopsis
Joan is no longer in love with Victor, but it pains her to feel she is being dishonest with him. Alice, her best friend, reassures her: she herself doesn’t feel passionate about her partner Eric and yet their relationship is smooth sailing. She has no idea he is having an affair with Rebecca, their mutual friend. When Joan finally decides to leave Victor and he disappears, the lives of the three friends and their relationships are turned upside down.
Director’s statement
“I like characters who make mistakes, start over, but continue making mistakes, like Buster Keaton when he falls and gets back up, one fall after the other, over and over again, but who keep going, without looking back, without blaming anyone. I like characters who get lost in their dream or their obsessions and who lose their way, over and over again, only to find another direction and yet another, and so on and so forth. I feel affection for those characters who wish they were better than they are but never truly manage to be. Never truly, except sometimes. I have affection for that cruel yet constructive awkwardness that is part of our human condition, being submerged by narratives, ideals and desires as much as by the flukes and hazards of reality.” Emmanuel Mouret
