A Geography professor with a particular fondness for paper maps, Fernando embarks on an impromptu trip to Portugal after his wife leaves him without any explanation. Along the way and once in Portugal, he meets Manuel, an itinerant gardener who tells him about his next destination. When Manuel dies unexpectedly from a heart attack, Fernando assumes his identity and travels to that next Portuguese house. The thoughtful dialogues by Avelina Prat and the nuanced performances of the cast make this film a gentle and hopeful meditation on family and purpose.
