The White Ribbon

From Sat 19 to Fri 25 Jul

Michael Haneke’s Cannes-prize-winning drama (it took the Palme d’Or in 2009), set in a German village prior to the outbreak of the First World War, explores the oppressively strict social conditions that gave rise to Nazism.

In a small, pre-First World War German village, strange and violent occurrences punctuate the strict order by which the local community lives. Beautifully filmed, with an almost clinical clarity, this is a haunting fairytale of suspicion, corruption and collective guilt.
