Established in 2023 in memory of Sophie Castille, a pioneering figure in the global circulation of European comics as International Rights Director and Vice-President of Licensing at Mediatoon, the award is presented annually at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. It recognises the excellence of translators, whose work plays a vital role in making graphic storytelling resonate across cultures.
Among the French titles selected in 2025 is Capital and Ideology: The Graphic Adaptation, by Claire Alet and Benjamin Adam, translated by Margaret Morrison and published by Abrams Comic Arts. Based on Thomas Piketty’s acclaimed book, the work offers a dynamic visual exploration of history’s economic systems.
Also in the running is The Incredible Story of Cuisine: From Prehistory to Today, 500,000 Years of Adventure, co-written by journalist Benoist Simmat and illustrator Stéphane Douay. First published by Les Arènes and translated by Montana Kane for NBM, this sweeping graphic narrative charts the global evolution of food and gastronomy.
Finally, Harry Dickson: Mysteras breathes new life into the legendary “American Sherlock Holmes.” Co-written by French author Doug Headline alongside Italians Luna Vergari and Onofrio Catacchio, and inspired by the work of Jean Ray, the volume was published by Dupuis and translated into English by Jerome Saincantin and Erica Olson Jeffrey for Cinebook.
The winner of the 2025 Sophie Castille Awards will be announced this September at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
