On Tuesday 9 December 2025, a celebration was organised at the French Institute for the 120th anniversary of the Language Assistant Programme.

Since the founding agreement, signed in 1905 between France and the United Kingdom, thousands of young people have travelled
between the two countries with the same goals: helping students to improve their language skills, and developing cultural awareness and mutual understanding.

Attended by H.E. Hélène Duchêne, Ambassador of France and Faye Taylor, Deputy Director for International Strategy & Partnerships at the Department for Education, the evening was the occasion for a roundtable with experts and alumni of the Language Assistant Programme (LAP).

Entitled The Language Assistant Programme: a token of youth mobility, the roundtable gathered:

  • Kate Ewart-Biggs, Deputy Chief Executive of the British Council
  • Mathieu Ausseil, Acting Chief Executive of France Education International
  • Felicity Lott, Soprano and LAP alumna

The conversation was chaired by Bernardette Holmes, director of the National Consortium for Languages Education and LAP alumna.
