In 1939, just two weeks after the Civil War’s end, Franco invites his top generals for a night of triumph at the luxurious Hotel Palace in Madrid, which has now been turned into a hospital. Teniente Medina will have to make sure that splendour returns to the hotel in just a few hours. In the hotel’s kitchen, a group of defeated Republican chefs will secretly prepare the meal—while also cook up their last chance to escape the country. In The Dinner, veteran Gómez Pereira skillfully balances political irony with comedy in a gripping way.
