When renowned French sculptor Auguste Rodin (Gérard Depardieu) notices the raw sculpting talent of the precocious Camille Claudel (Isabelle Adjani), the two artists begin a scandalous love affair. Camille becomes Auguste’s muse and assistant, sacrificing her own work to contribute to his sculptures.
However, as she starts desiring a recognition of her own, Camille is abandoned and gradually spirals into mental illness. Based upon the biography of Camille Claudel by Rein-Marie Paris, great niece of Camille, this hauntingly dark and brooding film embarks us into the outstanding talent and raging torrent that was Camille Claudel’s life.
The film was nominated to 12 César awards, and won five, including Best Film and Best Actress for Adjani, who also earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
