Valeria Bruni Tedeschi delivers a brilliant performance as Sandra, a 50-something, independent woman who works in a feminist bookstore, has no children by choice, and has carefully arranged her life to her liking. When Sandra first meets young Eliot, Eliot’s father Alex—a neighbour she barely recognises from the same apartment building—is foisting him upon her urgently as he races off with his very pregnant wife to the hospital. Unexpectedly, this encounter will be the beginning of an unusual relationship, against the stereotypes of traditional family definitions. This intimate, poignant, and ultimately joyous film was the biggest winner at the 2026 César Awards, with eight nominations and three wins, including Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Vimala Pons.
