Never one to shy away from discomfiting situations, Blier paired two beloved French stars for an unconventional romantic tale. Alain Delon plays Robert, a man who has nearly gone under from his drinking, but a hookup with stranger-on-a-train played by Nathalie Baye spurs him to latch onto her in hopes of stability—presuming at least one of them can separate reality from fantasy. Delon and Blier won César Awards for, respectively, acting and screenwriting, and as for Nathalie Baye, her captivating performance as the mysterious Donatienne was widely praised by audiences and critics alike due to its mesmerising versality.
