The debut film by Jacques Rozier, Adieu Philippine deserves to rank alongside Breathless and The 400 Blows as a classic of the French New Wave.
The story skips from Paris to Corsica as television cameraman Michel is followed to the island by two women keen on romance. Complications follow, and another shadow also overhangs the trio: Michel must soon leave to fight in the Algerian War. In the meantime, the film celebrates the energy, spontaneity and idiosyncrasy of youth in a series of incident-packed episodes. Rozier combines a verité shooting style with New Wave innovations and draws a pointed contrast between his characters’ freedom and the demands the world is about to place upon them.
