The only Soviet film to win the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival, and one of the best films of all times, this adaptation of Victor Rozonv’s play is both a tempestuous love story and a stark depiction of the cruelty of war and the damage it wreaked on the lives of ordinary people. Celebrated for its cinematography, direction and editing, this landmark film also boasted a new kind of complex and multi-dimensional heroine.
