In May 1890, after leaving the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Vincent Van Gogh arrives in Auvers-sur-Oise to stay with Doctor Gachet, a physician and patron of the arts. Pialat takes us through the last two months of Van Gogh’s life, as his personal conflicts and mental torments mount against the backdrop of the stunning Provençal countryside that is the subject of his final masterpieces. Pialat’s film, which Jean-Luc Godard called ‘totally astonishing’, pierces through the historical legend to produce a frank and deeply moving account of a man who redefined painting.
