In One Brief Moment All Eternity with Elif Shafak

Wed 2 Dec 2026

Some 175 years after Gustave Flaubert gave Emma Bovary her arsenic death, Booker Prize shortlisted author Elif Shafak hands the pen to the women who shaped him, real and fictional: a devoted nursemaid, an Egyptian dancer, a passionate lover who refuses to be forgotten, and Emma herself. In One Brief Moment All Eternity is a luminous reinvention of Flaubert’s life, from his childhood in Rouen to revolutionary Paris, Istanbul, Cairo and Beirut. Through these women’s voices, she creates both an intimate portrait of a great artist and an epic meditation on storytelling itself: who gets remembered, who gets erased, and how can literature endure through political upheaval, war and injustice?

Elif Shafak will be in conversation with Fiammetta Rocco, former culture editor of The Economist and Emeritus Director of the International Booker Prize. Elif Shafak is the British chair of the jury of the 2026 Prix de l’Entente Littéraire.

The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of the book will be available to buy on the night in both French and English, thanks to our partner bookshop Librairie La Page.
