This reading group is dedicated to W ou le Souvenir d’enfance (W or the Memory of Childhood) by acclaimed French author George Perec.
Perec was haunted by the Holocaust: his father died as a soldier in 1940, and his mother disappeared when deported to Auschwitz. Writing, for him, was an act of exorcism. Many of his works deal with absence, loss, and identity, often through wordplay.
In W ou le Souvenir d’enfance, we will discover the literary skills of Georges Perec who intertwined his childhood memories with an invented story that seems totally disconnected with the autobiographic purpose but both texts beautifully complement each other.
