War, Democracy and Resistance: the Stakes for Ukraine Today

To mark the opening of the Ukrainian Season at the French Institute, we are proud to present an exceptional evening dedicated to Ukraine’s ongoing geopolitical challenges and cultural resilience. 

Join us for a panel discussion featuring leading voices—renowned political scientists, professors, and journalists—who will examine Ukraine’s pivotal role in Europe’s geopolitical landscape. Topics will include internal and external solidarity, democratic transition, and the resurgence of nationalism in the face of Russian imperialist policies. 

Confirmed speakers include: 

  • Alexandra Goujon, French political scientist 
  • Olga Tokariuk, independent journalist and researcher 

 

The conversation will be followed by a screening of Intercepted  (2024), the latest documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Oksana Karpovych, offering a powerful artistic perspective on the war’s human and political dimensions.

About our speakers

 

Alexandra Goujon

Alexandra Goujon is a French political scientist specialising in Eastern Europe and a lecturer at the University of Burgundy. Her research focuses on social conflicts, nationalism, memory politics, and democratization in Ukraine and Belarus. Goujon has authored and contributed to several books and articles, including works on identity revolutions and citizen participation in Ukraine. Holding a PhD from Sciences Po Paris, she has been a visiting researcher at Harvard and is a member of the editorial board of Nationalities Papers. 

 

Olga Tokariuk  

Olha’s background is in journalism, with a focus on international affairs, and in counter-disinformation research. She is a former fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford and a non-resident fellow at CEPA (Centre for European Policy Analysis). Her reports and op-eds have been featured in Ukrainian and international media such as TIME, The Washington Post, NPR, BBC, Monocle, EFE (Spain), ANSA (Italy). She worked on disinformation research projects for Oxford Analytica, Mythos Labs, Zinc and other organizations.  Mrs Tokariuk is a frequent guest lecturer at various academic institutions including University of Oxford, Oxford Brookes University, University of Miami, etc. She holds an MA in political science and international relations from the University of Bologna and an MA in journalism from the Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv.
