The French Institute and Picturehouse team up to welcome Thierry Frémaux for special screenings of his films dedicated to the Lumière Brothers, Lumière! The Adventure Begins (2016) and Lumière! the Adventure Continues (2025).
Thierry Frémaux will do introductions and post-screening discussions:
- on 28 September with film critic and broadcaster Danny Leigh at Ciné Lumière, after the screening of Lumière! The Adventure Continues.
- on 29 September with Picturehouse’s BAFTA-winning Creative Director, Clare Binns at Picturehouse Central, after the screening of Lumière! The Adventure Begins.
Thierry Frémaux, the director of the Cannes Film Festival, the Institut Lumière, and the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, France – the birthplace of these remarkable brothers – brings a wealth of insight, history, and revelation to this journey back to the 1890s, when the Lumière Company, with their astonishing new invention, the cinematograph, made it possible for audiences to voyage around the world in moving pictures for the first time.
As inventors of the cinematograph, Louis and August Lumière helped to define and create what we’ve come to know as cinema. With his expert commentary, Frémaux’s films guide us through an expansive collection of restored Lumière shorts — some famous, some unseen until now – to explore how the earliest works of cinema continue to reverberate across the world of film today.
For any film lover or film worker, these events at Picturehouse and Ciné Lumière offer an opportunity to further reflect on titans of cinema past and present with Frémaux, whose work at Cannes and beyond, championing new voices and expanding viewers’ horizons, has helped continue the Lumière legacy.
