In England, shortly after the end of the Second World War, Stevens, an emotionally repressed butler working at the large country house Darlington Hall, begins to question whether his dogged loyalty to his former employer Lord Darlington – a strong supporter of appeasement in the 1930s – was misplaced and reflects on a missed romantic opportunity with the Hall’s former housekeeper Miss Kenton.
