The Teacher's Trail

The Teacher’s Trail is the Institut français du Royaume-Uni’s continuing professional development programme for teachers of French in the United-Kingdom. This programme aims at supporting future teachers, newly qualified and qualified teachers of French throughout their teaching career.

Every year, training opportunities are offered online and face to face all over the country.

 

 

Primary French Teachers – Getting started with the Primary French Project

  • Workshop description: This session will be useful to experienced teachers of French, as well as those who are new to teaching the subject. The Primary French Project provides all the resources you need to teach the language throughout Key Stage 2.

This introductory workshop will demonstrate how to:

·        teach the language, and develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing
·        develop pronunciation
·        record progress
·        make links with English literacy
·        develop an understanding of culture

The workshop will be useful to language coordinators as well as class teachers.

Summer School in France for Primary School Teachers of French

  • Registration deadline: Saturday 31 May 2025
  • Location: Alliance Française de Normandie, Rouen, France
  • Date: Sunday 3 August 2025 to Sunday 10 August 2025
  • Eligibility: Primary School Teachers teaching French
  • Content: General French language group courses will be offered (20h) as well as 2 workshops focused on French phonics. This summer school is intended to help teachers upskill their proficiency in the language in order to feel more confident in the classroom. Please note that the course will not cover the pedagogy of teaching French and will not provide any teaching materials or techniques.
  • Fees: Training fees, breakfast, dinner and accommodation in a French host-family are covered by the Institut français du Royaume-Uni. Travel expenses will be incurred by the participant.
  • Registration: Fill the application form and send it to projects-education@institut-francais.org.uk by Saturday 31 May 2025. Selected participants will be contacted by mid-June.

Secondary French Teachers – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Sustainable MFL teaching with Creative Play

  • Language used during the workshop: Mainly French
  • Content:

    During this workshop, Michaël Vidon will show strategies he has used over the years as French teacher and a as a freelance Spoken Word artist interested in multilingualism and translation.

    It will be a hands-on workshop where participants are invited to collaborate to trial new strategies, reflect on their usefulness in the classroom and adapt them to their current setting. Strategies to be discussed aim to enrich curricula at KS3, 4 and 5. They can be used as starters /plenaries, one-off lessons or built-in your SOWs to offer progression across the different stages.

    Michaël Vidon’s three Rs of sustainable MFL teaching with creative play:
    – “reduce” with simple prompts and constraints to express ourselves without fear.
    – “reuse” French language in culturally situated authentic texts in translations and found poems.
    – “recycle” our experiences, cultures and languages in individual and collaborative poems.

    The session is hands-on, so be prepared to play, write and share with each other.
    Participants will need to bring a poem or song in French and a phone/tablet connected to internet.
