The Teacher's Trail

The Teacher’s Trail is the Institut français du Royaume-Uni’s continuing professional development programme for teachers of French in the United-Kingdom. This programme aims at supporting future teachers, newly qualified and qualified teachers of French throughout their teaching career.

Every year, training opportunities are offered online and face to face all over the country.

 

Primary Teacher Language Upskilling

  • Date: Tuesday 10 September to Tuesday 26 November 2024

  • Objectives: You are currently a professional KS2 level teacher willing to get more confident in teaching French to your pupils while developing your linguistics skills and intercultural knowledge.
  • Learning Approach: Reviewing KS2 Programs and objectives, we designed a training specifically based on reinforcing grammar, phonetic and culture key points to reach your teaching needs and expectations.
  • Resources: The Institut français is providing all the materials designed by our specialists for this training.

Cultural Enrichment Workshop for Secondary Teachers

  • Date: Part 1 : Wednesday 26 June 2024 from 15:30 to 17:30 / Part 2 : Wednesday 3 July 2024 from 15:30 to 17:30
  • Location: Online
  • Content: This workshop (4h) will provide examples of activities and resources that Secondary Teachers can use in the classroom to help students deepen their cultural knowledge and vocabulary about key aspects of French and Francophone culture, in line with current GCSE and A-Level objectives. This online workshop will be composed of two 2-hour sessions.
  • Eligibility: Secondary School Teachers teaching French. Selected participants will have to follow part 1 (2h) and part 2 (2h) of the workshop.
  • Fees: Training fees are covered by the Institut français du Royaume-Uni.

Primary French Teachers – Developing Dictionary Skills in key Stage 2

  • Language used during the workshop: English
  • Workshop description:The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt… The teaching should…lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3. Pupils should be taught to broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary.

This workshop will explore ways in which dictionary skills can be developed through the Primary French Project materials:

·        developing a sense of chronology through numbers and letters
·        sorting words by alphabetical order
·        knowing the function of all main word types
·        navigating a simple and a more complex bilingual dictionary
·        looking up words to place into a sentence

Participants might wish to bring with them a copy of the bilingual dictionary used in their KS2 classes.

Summer School in France for Primary School Teachers of French

  • Location: Alliance Française de Normandie, Rouen, France
  • Date: Sunday 28 July 2024 to Sunday 4 August 2024
  • Eligibility: Primary School Teachers teaching French
  • Content: General French language group courses will be offered (20h) as well as 2 workshops focused on French phonics. This summer school is intended to help teachers upskill their proficency in the language in order to feel more confident in the classroom. Please note that the course will not cover the pedagogy of teaching French and will not provide any teaching materials or techniques.
  • Fees: Training fees, breakfast, dinner and accommodation in a French host-family are covered by the Institut français du Royaume-Uni. Travel expenses will be incurred by the participant.

The Primary French Project

The Primary French Project provides free teaching materials that aim to train all who teach French at KS2.
